Dopamine beta-hydroxylase, abbreviated as DBH in English, DBH deficiency is a rare disorder that affects the body’s ability to regulate blood pressure and body temperature. It is caused by a genetic change in the DBH gene that results in stimulation of the non-functional DBH enzyme production. People who lack functional DBH are unable to convert dopamine into norepinephrine, which causes a shortage of norepinephrine in the body. Therefore, DBH deficiency is also known as norepinephrine deficiency. Symptoms of DBH deficiency usually begin in late childhood, and people often experience symptoms such as vomiting, dehydration, low blood pressure or blood sugar levels, and orthostatic hypotension. Some other symptoms may include drooping eyelids, nasal congestion, muscle pain, and weakness.
