Humans are born with two kidneys, shaped like two beans. They are on either side of your spine, just above your waist. The kidneys are one of the most important organs in the human body and have the function of purifying toxins in the blood and converting waste into urine. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a useful measure of your kidneys’ ability to filter, and a GFR of 60 or higher is within the normal range, meaning your kidneys are functioning well. However, a GFR below 60 can be a sign of kidney disease, while a GFR below 15 can mean kidney failure.
Kidney disease means your kidneys are damaged and can’t filter your blood the way they should, and waste and fluids that should be excreted keep building up in your body, which can cause swelling, fatigue, weakness, nausea, poor sleep, and shortness of breath. Without any treatment, the damage can get worse and your kidneys eventually stop working. This is called kidney failure or end-stage renal disease, which can be life-threatening. The main types of kidney disease include:
- Chronic Kidney Disease – This happens when your kidneys are continuously damaged. They gradually lose their ability to filter waste and fluids from the blood. This damage can get worse over time.
- Fabry disease – Fabry disease is a rare genetic disorder that affects organs around your body, including your heart, brain, and kidneys, because it converts less blood than they need, and ultimately, this can lead to chronic Kidney disease or kidney failure.
- Glomerulonephritis – Glomerulonephritis means that the tiny filters (glomeruli) in the kidneys are damaged and lose their ability to remove water and fluid from the blood, which can lead to kidney failure over time.
- IgA nephropathy – Also known as Berger’s disease, IgA nephropathy occurs when immune system proteins build up in your kidneys and attack the tiny filters (glomeruli) that clean your blood. IgA nephropathy can cause Chronic kidney disease, kidney failure, or death.
- Polycystic kidney disease – Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder that causes cysts to form in your kidneys and other organs. These cysts reduce the ability of the kidneys to clean blood and, over time, can lead to kidney failure.
