AYURVEDA is based on the Ayurvedic philosophy that the entire universe is the interaction of the five great elements – space, air, fire, water and earth – energy. Vata, Pitta and Kapha are combinations and arrangements of these five elements, which manifest as patterns that exist in all creation. In the body, Vata is the subtle energy of movement, Pitta is the energy of digestion and metabolism, and Kapha is the energy that forms the structure of the body.

Vata is the subtle energy associated with movement – composed of space and air. It controls breathing, blinking, muscle and tissue movement, heart beat, and all movements in the cytoplasm and membranes. Overall, Vata promotes creativity and flexibility. Out of balance, Vata develops fear and anxiety.

Pitta is expressed as the body’s metabolic system – consisting of fire and water. It controls digestion, absorption, assimilation, nutrition, metabolism and body temperature. Overall, Pitta promotes understanding and intelligence. Out of balance, Pitta can cause anger, hatred, and jealousy.

Kapha is the energy that forms the structure of the body – bones, muscles, tendons – and provides the “glue” that holds cells together, formed from soil and water. Kapha provides water to all body parts and systems. It lubricates the joints, hydrates the skin, and maintains immunity. In general, Kapha is expressed as love, calm and forgiveness. Out of balance, Kapha will lead to attachment, greed and jealousy. Ayurveda is based on the three Doshas, alternating Kapha (water), Pitta (fire) and Vata (wind) in sequence every four hours, 2 times a day for a total of 6 hours.
