Thyroid cancer is when abnormal cells in the thyroid begin to divide and grow in an uncontrolled way. Although thyroid cancer can affect anyone, it is almost three times more common in women than in men, and if left untreated, it can spread to other parts of your body. Most cases of thyroid cancer occur without an apparent cause or risk factor, however, certain factors, such as radiation exposure, a low-iodine diet, and genetic defects, can also increase the risk of developing thyroid cancer. Treatment depends on the type of cancer you have and how far the cancer has spread, but removal of part or all of the thyroid is the preferred treatment for cancer tumors 1-4cm. Many patients also receive multiple treatments, including hormone therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or targeted therapy.
